At Calm Mama Collective, we firmly believe that every individual deserves access to proper antenatal education, regardless of their financial circumstances. We understand that the cost of antenatal classes can pose a barrier for many families, potentially leaving them vulnerable to difficult birth experiences. To address this issue, we have created the Calm Mama Collective Community Space—an inclusive initiative that provides affordable antenatal classes on a ‘pay what you can’ basis, starting from a minimum of £50.
The Importance of Affordable Antenatal Education
Antenatal education plays a crucial role in preparing expectant parents for the transformative journey of childbirth. It provides valuable information, guidance, and support, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their pregnancy, labour, and postnatal care. Proper antenatal education can be the make or break for many births, as it equips parents with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the process and make choices that align with their preferences and values.
The Limitations of the NHS System
While the NHS strives to provide comprehensive healthcare services, it faces limitations in the realm of antenatal education. Due to resource constraints, the availability of antenatal classes can be limited, leaving many families without access to the information and support they need. Moreover, the NHS often focuses on providing essential medical care, which may not cover all aspects of antenatal education, such as birth preparation techniques, coping strategies, and postnatal care guidance. At current the Bump to Birth NHS antenatal course held at East Surrey Hospital covers a tour of the birth centre and delivery suite and the benefits of using the birth centre but does not cover any coping strategies, any information about how birth works, any information about the pros and cons of different pain relief options and medical interventions in birth. All of which is vital information for every birthing person to know before they are in labour.
Addressing Financial Barriers with affordable antenatal course options
Recognising the financial barriers that prevent individuals from accessing antenatal education, we established the Calm Mama Collective Community Space. This initiative operates on a ‘pay what you can’ basis, starting from a minimum of £50, allowing those in financial need to access proper antenatal education. By offering a flexible pricing structure, we aim to accommodate various financial circumstances, ensuring that no one is denied the opportunity to receive essential information and support during their pregnancy journey.
Trust and Honesty in the Community Space
We understand the importance of trust and honesty in ensuring that the community space is accessible to those who genuinely need it. While we do not require proof of financial need, we kindly ask participants to be honest about their circumstances, using the community space only when it is truly necessary. This approach allows us to create a supportive environment that prioritises the well-being of all expectant parents, while also making sure the limited spaces are available to those who truly require them.
Empowering Positive Birth Experiences for all
Our ultimate goal is to empower individuals and ensure that they have positive birth experiences. We believe that by providing affordable antenatal education through the community space, we can help individuals feel confident, informed, and prepared for the journey ahead. By learning about different birthing options, pain management techniques, and postnatal care, parents can make decisions that align with their desires, promoting a sense of control and empowerment throughout the birthing process. By creating an inclusive and supportive environment, we aim to empower individuals, nurture positive birth experiences, and contribute to the overall well-being of families in our community. Remember, birth is a transformative journey, and education is the key to unlocking its full potential.
