Hypnobirthing is the misunderstood child of the antenatal education world.

To many people hypnobirthing is akin to sitting in a circle, crossed legs, hmming om whilst chanting about being a goddess.

That is not my goal in our hypnobirthing classes! We do some gorgeous pregnancy relaxations at the end of each session but all I ask of you during those is that you sit back, close your eyes, breath and relax!

Hypnobirthing is a fully comprehensive antenatal program, we cover:

  • How the uterus works during labour.
  • What hormones control labour and how they work.
  • How to make a birth plan.
  • What are all the options available to you in terms of birth place, pain relief and so much more.
  • What happens and what to do whilst you are in labour.

But more importantly, we talk about you and how do you feel about labour. We will talk about how we spend most of our lives being told that labour is a scary, painful and traumatic event. An unpleasant means to an end to meet your baby.

Well, hypnobirthing is here to teach you why that mindset is going to make your labour harder. How being worried, being fearful and feeling out of control works against your body in labour, makes your labouring muscles have to work harder and makes your birthing hormones stop supporting your birth. And after we learn all of that you will learn how to change that! How to use relaxation, breathing techniques, empowering knowledge and some positivity to change this! To learn how to embrace your labouring body and help it birth your baby, stacking the odds in your favour for a positive birth experience.

  • Course taught by a Psychologist
  • If you are doing a group course, you will have the opportunity to make friends with like-minded families
  • You are likely to experience a more comfortable labour and birth, although it is important to recognise that a pain-free birth is not the focus of hypnobirthing
  • Your baby is more likely to born into a relaxed environment, alert and ready to feed and bond.
  • The length of labour is often shorter when using hypnobirthing
  • You will likely require no or fewer drugs and less medical intervention
  • Mamas often return to their pre-birth wellness at a faster rate
  • Your birth partner will learn how to support you and have a key role in the birth
  • The basic physiology of birth, how your body works when birthing your baby
  • The positive belief that giving birth can be the most wonderful experience a woman and her birth partner will experience
  • To look forward optimistically to a safe, calm, comfortable and stress-free birth
  • How to release any fears that may in some way be associated with childbirth, and thus avoid the ‘Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome’
  • How to relax deeply and quickly using breathing techniques, visualisation and deep relaxation
  • How to stay calm, relaxed and in control throughout your labour
  • How to promote the production of your birthing hormones
  • How to trust your body to work naturally and in harmony with your baby
  • How to prepare your birth preferences so that you can be better informed and more aware of your options
  • The knowledge and power to navigate birth should you require intervention or assistance
  • Positions to help you birth your baby more easily and comfortably
  • Breathing techniques that work with your body to optimise your body’s own natural expulsive reflex, enabling you to birth your baby more gently, rather than being forced and directed by pushing, which is exhausting and less effective
I recommend starting my hypnobirthing course in Surrey anywhere from 24 weeks pregnant onwards. Ideally, you would start before your 36th week of pregnancy; the more time you have to practise the techniques and relaxations, the better. However, if you have just discovered hypnobirthing today and are approaching your due date, it is not too late. Get in touch and we can organise a three-hour workshop that will give you many important lessons – even if you go into labour just one hour after completing the course!

NCT and hypnobirthing a very different courses, both with their own merits.

NCT remains a popular choice for many families as it has been around for so many years.

The good news is if you want to do an NCT course then hypnobirthing is the perfect addition to your NCT course, we take what you learn at NCT and build upon it leaving you as prepared and positive as possible. I have many clients who do both courses with Calm Mama Collective and the NCT.

But, if you were not planning on NCT classes do not fear, NCT only focuses for around 3ish hours on birth so here at Calm Mama Collective you get all that birth knowledge and so much more. Everything else you learn at NCT about newborns is easily found online, you will find that information with just a little bit of research.

Many birth partners are doubtful ahead of taking hypnobirthing courses in Surrey, but once they have done one session and see the scientific basis behind these antenatal classes, they are quick to become converts! However, if your partner would find having a quick chat with me helpful, then drop me an email and we can arrange a phone conversation. We also run regularly hypnobirthing taster or birth preparation classes free of charge which would allow you and your birth partner to get a great sense of what hypnobirthing has to offer them.

Ideally, yes. Everyone has different schedules, and if there are timing issues, please get in touch and we can discuss a private course where I can be more flexible with the times and dates of our antenatal classes in Surrey. It is preferable that your birth partner is present because, as will become apparent, the mama needs to be focused on staying in her zone and her breathing during labour to maintain a calm birthing method, which means that the partner plays an important role in creating the ideal birthing environment for the birthing mama. It also serves as a lovely time for you to spend together, focusing on your upcoming arrival and enjoying some relaxation! Then again, if it is really impossible for your birth partner to come to the class, you will be prepared with all the knowledge and resources to be able to share critical information with your partner at home afterwards. Moreover, I can always provide some additional support after the end of your course, if required.

Yes. If required, I am happy to accept a deposit of £50. Depending on how long until the beginning of the course, we will book a series of instalments ahead of the first class. I do require the full balance to be paid prior to the course commencing.

Yes, please keep an eye on our social media. Calm Mama Collective - Antenatal, Hypnobirthing and Breastfeeding Classes on Facebook or @calmmama_hypnobirthing on Instagram for any sales. We also regularly offer 'community' spaces for those in financial need. It has been a tough few years financially for everyone and I do not have finances to prevent those who want quality antenatal education from being able to access this. As such I offer a community space on each course at a heavily discounted rate. To find out more just contact me and mention community space in your message. I am also very proud to be a Blue Light Card partner. I offer a 20% to any parent to be who is a blue light card holder or is an NHS worker mention this in your booking form. I am also a Social Baby Club partner, this means that Social Baby Club membership holders recieve a 10% discount on any booking, including postnatal breastfeeding support.

But don’t just take my word for it. Here is what science has to say on the matter.

“A 2013 BJM (British Journal of Midwifery) study found that those using hypnobirthing had a shorter labour, lower Caesarean rates, and lower rates of pain medication. The majority of women reported feeling more confident, relaxed, less fearful, focused, and more in control. They also commented on the ease and comfort of labour and birth and the satisfaction of having their partners involved and supportive. (Phillips-Moore, 2013)

What my clients say

I can not recommend this course highly enough. I was very nervous about giving birth to my first baby, this course helped me overcome my anxiety. Techniques learned helped me to relax and stay calm during the birth. I gave birth to my baby girl in the pool using gas and air exactly the way I planned and it was such a positive experience.

Marina, Coulsdon

Thanks so much for this course. Whilst an emergency c section was not on the plan, I was so calm, able to make a decision based on his safety and at no point was it stressful or traumatic it was just as beautiful! Thank you so much for being a part of our journey!

Jasmine, Merstham

Thank you for all of your support with the hypnobirthing, I could not have achieved this beautiful birth experience without it. Also thank you for recommending that I chat with the home birth team it was the best decision I ever made!!

Sarah, Oxted
