What Is Hypnobirthing?




Firstly, let us address the elephant (or hypnopotamus) in the room – hypnobirthing is not hypnosis! At no point during a  hypnobirthing class will you be walking around a room clucking like a chicken.

At its most basic, hypnobirthing is a logical and natural approach to childbirth grounded in scientific theory. It teaches how birth works from a physiological perspective and how we, as mothers and birthing partners, can ensure the needed hormones and muscles involved in birthing a baby are working to their full potential. This is may come to a shock to many people, but birth is not something to be scared of. Birth is a process women’s bodies are perfectly designed to do, it is hard work but women are strong and capable. With the right preparation any woman can have a calm, confident and positive birth.

Hypnobirthing teaches mothers and their birth partners how to work through their fears surrounding birth, learn how their body is perfectly designed to give birth and alongside relaxation and breathing techniques this helps the labouring mama remain calm and relaxed to experience an intensely powerful, positive and euphoric experience.

Hypnobirthing has its foundations in the understanding that when we are fearful, we are tense and muscles holding tension can not function in the way they are designed. If we spend our lives surrounded by the message that birth is something to fear then we will approach birth fearful and the birthing body is not given the opportunity to work to its full potential. Hypnobirthing helps parents to reduce and remove those fearsso they are able to support their body to function the way it is designed to do.
